Big News: California Cannabis Excise Tax Lowered from 19% to 15% Image

Good news for California cannabis customers: starting October 1, 2025, the state is lowering the cannabis excise tax from 19% to 15%. That means you’ll be saving more every time you shop at Tropicanna.

What Changed?

For a short window (July 1–September 30, 2025), the excise tax jumped up to 19%. This increase was required by state law to replace revenue that used to come from the cultivation tax.

But with the signing of Assembly Bill 5643, the tax is now officially dropping to 15% of the gross receipts on all retail cannabis sales. Even better, the next adjustment won’t come until July 2028.

What This Means for You

  • Lower Prices at Checkout: When you shop starting October 1, your total cost will reflect the reduced 15% excise tax.
  • More Savings Across the Board: Whether you’re picking up flower, vapes, edibles, or concentrates, you’ll feel the difference in your receipt.
  • Transparency Matters: If any retailer charges 19% excise tax after October 1, they’re over-collecting. At Tropicanna, we always keep our pricing honest and accurate.

Why It Matters

Taxes are one of the biggest contributors to the final price of cannabis in California. By lowering the excise tax, lawmakers are aiming to make legal cannabis more affordable and competitive with the illicit market. For customers, this means real savings without sacrificing quality or compliance.
